Town of New Glasgow
Office of the TOWN ENGINEER

ENGINEERING AND PUBLIC WORKS
SAFETY PROGRAM

Jim Rizzotti, Safety Supervisor

The Town of New Glasgow Engineering and Public Works Department takes great pride in its comprehensive Safety Program.

  • Department Supervisors and employees have demonstrated their commitment to safety, and in November 2005 achieved safety certification with the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association. This Certificate of Recognition is displayed at our Engineering and Public Works Office, as an acknowledgment of our employees’ commitment to achieving the Town of New Glasgow’s safety goals. As one of the largest towns in Nova Scotia, this is a significant achievement.
  • The process to attain this certification has involved a long term commitment from Town of New Glasgow staff. The Engineering and Public Works Safety Committee has been meeting regularly since 1999. Since that time the Safety Committee has had various qualified safety organizations perform external audits and provide advice on setting up a comprehensive safety program.
  • Due to the high risk nature of our daily work, it was determined that the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association was the agency most appropriate for the needs of the Engineering and Public Works Department. The Town of New Glasgow requires any contractor we hire to be certified by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association. The Engineering and Public Works Safety Committee, and the employees it represents, believe that we too should have this safety recognition.
  • Whether working on our roadways, on Town waterlines, with chemicals at the Water Treatment Plant, or servicing heavy equipment, our employees have demonstrated their commitment to safety excellence.
  • With the initial guidance of the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association, a comprehensive safety program was created. This program will continually be updated and improved to meet the needs of our workforce, and will require ongoing dedication in order to maintain a current Letter of Good Standing.
