The John Brother MacDonald Stadium is the lone stadium in New Glasgow, located at 530 Washington Street, with a single ice surface and full service Mezzanine. The rink is governed by The Scotia Rink Commission which is chaired by New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan. This commission is comprised of 3 Town Councillors - Terry Curley, Henderson Paris, and Clyde Fraser, with public representation from Dennis Brophy, Joel Sellers and Jim McKenna. The Stadium staff includes Mike Adam, Manager; Melody Board, Administrative Assistant; Scott Cooke, Chief Operator; and operators Robert Davidson and Mark Weatherbie. As Manager, Mike oversees the stadium’s daily operations and major events including the Sobeys Slam World Curling Tour event in 2010, various regional, provincial and Atlantic hockey championships, as well as a home show, car show, circus, concerts, banquets, weddings and receptions throughout the summer. Mike is a Certified Level 2 Arena Operator though the Maritime Arena Operations Institute. He serves on the Town of New Glasgow Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) and is a member of the Accident and Investigation Sub-Committee. In addition to his rink responsibilities, Mike serves as the Highland Zone Representative on the Board of Directors for the Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia (RFANS).
The Stadium has ice in nine months of the year (August – April) and is proud to be the home of the Heather Figure Skating Club, New Glasgow Bombers Minor Hockey, Pictou County Minor Hockey, North Nova Gryphons boy’s hockey team, Pictou County Adult Skaters, Pictou County Junior ‘A’ Crushers of the MHL, Weeks Major Midgets, New Glasgow Bomber Old Timers, Kinsmen Power Skating, as well as various other hockey schools, birthday rentals and group rentals. Throughout the year, the stadium also hosts various Provincial, Regional, and Atlantic Championships. The Stadium has also been home to other on-ice events including the Women’s World Curling Tour Sobey’s Slam.
During the remainder of the year we host a variety of events such as home shows, car shows, circuses, North Nova Education Centre graduation ceremonies, the Johnny Miles Marathon reception, garage sales, weddings and other events that require larger venues.
The John Brother MacDonald Stadium has been the minor hockey home rink of NHL players and Stanley Cup Champions, Colin White of the New Jersey Devil, Jon Sim of the New York Islanders, and Derrick Walser. Colin, Jon and Derrick were also former teammates during their minor hockey days at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium. Former NHLer Lowell MacDonald of Thorburn also played his minor hockey out of New Glasgow Stadium. The jerseys of White, Sim, Walser and MacDonald are proudly displayed in the Stadium.
Stadium Information:
The New Glasgow Stadium was built in 1950 and opened in 1951. In 2004, the Stadium was dedicated and renamed in memory of community sports legend, John Brother MacDonald. As we progress through 2011, there will be several events celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Stadium in our community.

Mike Adam joined the Town of New Glasgow as Rink Manager of the John Brother MacDonald Stadium in 2009. As Manager, Mike manages the stadium’s daily operations and major events including the Sobeys Slam World Curling Tour event in 2010, various regional, provincial and Atlantic hockey championships, as well as a home show, car show, circus, concerts, banquets, weddings and receptions throughout the summer.
