The role of the Department of Community Development is to provide leadership and partnership in the delivery and coordination of recreation, facilities, community programs and events, tourism product and destination development, business development and economic development.
In 2010, the Department of Community Development announced the departments.
The Department will use the plan as a guide for community economic development, in conjunction with the Town of New Glasgow’s Strategic Plan, to prepare and deliver improved services and programs to the community. To accomplish this we will cooperate with and work in partnership with the business community, community members, local organizations, stakeholders and various federal and provincial government departments, agencies, as appropriate.
The Town Council supports the development of a self reliant community that has the ability to address issues that will improve its economic, social, environmental and cultural environment and approved the Community Development Plan for New Glasgow in January of 2010. The plan is a 3-5 year plan, which will be reviewed annually.
The plan defines 9 key human service areas with corresponding goals, actions, resources, target groups, outputs, measurable outcomes and key performance indicators.

4. Community and Recreational Facilities/Parks, Trails, Tracks & Playgrounds
5. Festivals & Special Events
6. Health, Safety & Wellness
7. Arts, Cultural & Heritage Development
8. Land Use Planning
9. Marketing & Communications – (implemented throughout plan)

In 2009, Geralyn Mac Donald joined the Town of New Glasgow as Director of Community Development. Geralyn’s extensive experience in economic and community development coupled with her background in teaching and project management make her a significant addition to the town’s management team.
